wanted to scare and shake the people of boston. good afternoon, i am john sasaki in for tori campbell. two days after the devastation in boston a explosion at a fertilizer plant in texas killed and injured many. it happened at a town near dallas. sal castaneda joins us with more. >> reporter: the explosion is blamed for the deaths of between 5 and 15 people according to authorities. the explosion's violent force was captured in this amateur video. watch closely as it quickly goes from bad to worse. >> -- sure the -- [ explosion ] >> officials say the explosion did not happen until nearly a half-hour after the initial fire. emergency responders already on the scene are among some of the missing feared dead. the scene is in the small community of west, texas, about an hour and a half south of dallas, it is near waco. the fertilizer plant had tank of anhad druse ammon ammonia, today the search continues. >> it is a slow methodical search and they are using every available resource they have to do that correct he and make sure we don't miss anything or anybody. >> today officials say the

revealed in the information. good afternoon. i'm pam cook in for tori campbell. >>> we begin with a developing situation in the south bay. a hazardous material situation we've been reporting on all morning has forced a power alert in the san jose area. let's get straight out to ktvu's tara moriarty who is in san jose with what is going on right now. tara? >> reporter: sabotage or stealing copper. these are some theories being floated around out here. regarding what happened this morning, vandalism to the pg&e substakes and also some -- sub station and also vandalism down the road on monterey street here. authorities say some fiber cables were cut shutting down cell and landline service for thousands of at&t customers in the san jose and gilroy area. that means 911 calls were affected, although we don't know the extent of the problem just yet. this video shows the scene headed northbound on monterey. there's a fleet of pg&e and at&t service vehicles. this is the area from which sheriff's deputies say people heard 30 to 40 gunshots around 1:45 this morning. >> the substation has vanda

area. that's one of the top stories. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. we begin, though, with breaking news in los gatos where newschopper2 is over a gas leak downtown that shut down highway 9 for a time. the highway patrol issued a sig- alert for highway 9 at santa cruz avenue due to the broken line. but we just learned the road has reopened. these are live pictures, once again, from newschopper2 of the scene. pg&e says they are not sure about the cause of the break but the leak has been capped. a chase bank next to the bank was briefly evacuated. this was first reported just after 10:30. once again, a gas leak in los gatos this morning. >>> the bay area's bid to host the super bowl just got a boost during the past two hours. new at noon, ktvu's sal castanedo joins us live to let us know the familiar names joining the effort. >> reporter: you said it. today at city hall some pretty big names participated in a meeting to try to secure the bay area's bid for the super bowl. now, bay area leaders are pulling out some nfl stars in its bid to host super bowl l. today mayor lee ann

tori campbell. a moment of silence was held for a teen who was killed while playing a game of chicken with a train. we're at high school where students and staff remember the teenager. >> reporter: it's been a tearful morning here at the high school. grief counselors and school psychologists are on hand all day to help students cope with the loss of 14-year-old austin price. a makeshift memorial started early this morning right near those train tracks. >> we love you, miss you, you'll always be in our hearts. amen. >> reporter: about a hundred students started the day with tears remembering austin price. >> he was a good student, always nice to everybody, loving person. >> reporter: the sheriff aest department is saying the 14- year-old was playing chicken on the train tracks when the train hit and killed him. >> he's still my best friend. i really miss him. i'm going to miss him a lot. >> i'm sorry to kick you out under the circumstances. it's not safe. >> reporter: many walked to and from in this area. officials spent time making sure students stay off the tracks and away from the t
